Study
Implementation of International Environmental Conventions in Mongolia

Mongolia is a party to 15 international environmental conventions and 16 protocols, with over 30 environmental laws currently in effect in the country. However, there is a lack of adequate coordination between these laws and the aforementioned international agreements, as well as an effective system for monitoring their implementation

To enhance the execution of international agreements and conventions, it is essential for both citizens and relevant government authorities to develop a shared understanding.

In order to promote and evaluate the implementation of international treaties ratified by Mongolia in the area of environmental protection, the Mongolian Environmental Civil Council (MECC) has initiated studies on the following agreements:

  • Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals
  • Convention on Biological Diversity
  • Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety under the Convention on Biological Diversity
  • United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change

Researchers have analyzed provisions of national environmental law that contradict these international conventions. Additionally, a legal opinion has been prepared regarding the implementation of these agreements. As part of the study, presentations and training sessions were conducted for students in environmental and biology courses.
