Strengthening the Investigation of Environmental Crimes in Mongolia
The programme focused on key considerations in investigating and adjudicating environmental crimes. In Choibalsan, 20 participants—including judges, prosecutors, environmental investigators, protected-area representatives and forensic professionals—received practical training on:
- Collecting and submitting plant samples
- Examining wildlife-related evidence
- Collecting and documenting timber samples
- Conducting environmental crime-scene inspections
- Packaging, labeling, storing and transporting evidence
- Assessing environmental damage
- Applying relevant legislation, procedures and forensic standards
The delegation also visited the forensic departments in Khentii, Dornod and Sukhbaatar provinces to exchange experience with local experts and learn about their work, facilities and operational needs.
During the field session in the Dariganga area, participants practiced documenting vegetation, identifying rare and very rare medicinal plants, and measuring and recording the naturally occurring and cultivated populations of дэрэвгэр жиргэрүү (Saposhnikovia divaricata).
The activity strengthened cooperation between national and provincial forensic institutions and supported a more consistent, scientifically grounded approach to collecting environmental evidence, calculating damage and resolving environmental crime cases.
