Dialogue and Trust
Perspectives on Regional Cooperation in Northeast Asia

On 8–9 June 2026, the Hanns Seidel Foundation representations in Mongolia, China (Beijing), and Central Asia jointly organized the international workshop “Understanding the Past, Shaping the Future: Perspectives on Regional Cooperation in Northeast Asia” in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

The workshop brought together distinguished scholars, researchers, and policy experts from Mongolia, China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Germany, and Poland to exchange perspectives on regional cooperation, trust-building, and dialogue in Northeast Asia. Participants explored how historical legacies, national narratives, and current geopolitical developments shape opportunities and challenges for cooperation in the region.

Through national presentations, plenary discussions, and thematic working groups, participants examined pathways for confidence-building, practical cooperation, and the role of Europe as a constructive partner in regional dialogue. The discussions highlighted the importance of sustained academic and policy exchange in addressing shared regional challenges and fostering mutual understanding.

The workshop marks the beginning of a longer-term collaborative process, including the preparation of a joint publication and a follow-up study visit to Germany later this year.

HSF Mongolia, HSF China, and HSF Central Asia extend their sincere gratitude to all speakers, experts, and participants for their valuable contributions and commitment to strengthening dialogue across regions.
