Kick-off event
NORTHEAST ASIAN YOUTH CLIMATE COUNCIL

Young voices, big impact: A new generation of climate actors is emerging in Northeast Asia. With the official founding of the Northeast Asian Youth Climate Council, dedicated young people from four countries are sending a strong message for cross-border cooperation – for climate protection, peace, and a shared future.

On June 4, 2025, the Northeast Asian Youth Climate Council (NEAYCC) was officially launched in Ulaanbaatar. The council brings together young climate leaders from Mongolia, China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea, sending a strong signal for youth-led regional cooperation in the fields of climate and peace.

The founding of the NEAYCC represents the culmination of a year-long collaboration within the framework of the UNDPPA initiative “Futuring Peace in Northeast Asia.” It also marks the beginning of a new chapter in youth-led climate diplomacy in the region.

As part of the founding ceremony, the members of the NEAYCC presented the Northeast Asian Youth Declaration, which outlines shared priorities and goals for ambitious climate action in Northeast Asia. The day featured welcome remarks from high-level partner institutions, including:

  • Mr. Jaap van Hierden, UN Resident Coordinator in Mongolia
  • Ms. Chimguundari Navaan-Yunden, Ambassador-at-Large and Director of the Preparatory Committee for COP17 UNCCD, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia
  • Mr. Felix Glenk, Country Representative of the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSS) in Mongolia

In his speech, Mr. Glenk emphasized:
“Young people in Mongolia and the region have already demonstrated how vital their voices are for transparency, accountability, and sustainable future policy – and that the Youth Council provides a concrete instrument to achieve exactly that.”
