Management of Local Protected Areas: Achievements and Lessons Learned

On November 11, 2025, a Workshop titled “Management of Local Protected Areas: Achievements and Lessons Learned” was successfully held in Arkhangai Province. The Workshop was supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation Mongolia and jointly organized with the Luujin Wildlife Conservation NGO, the Arkhangai Provincial Department of Environment and Tourism, and the Mongolian Rangers Association.

Representatives of community-based organizations, the provincial environmental authority, environmental police, and the prosecutor’s office participated in the Workshop.

Key Topics and Outcomes of the Workshop

During the Workshop, the participants discussed the management experience, achievements, and challenges of the Khoid Mogoin Gol Teeliin and Bukhun Shariin Nuruu Local Protected Areas. The agenda also included broad discussions on enhancing the participation of local herders, strengthening the capacity of rangers, and improving cooperation with law enforcement agencies.

The Workshop resulted in several important shared insights

• Even without international or domestic project funding, there is a clear need to further develop sustainable and practical solutions for long-term management of Local Protected Areas.

• Strengthening the participation of local communities and herders is essential for improving the effectiveness of conservation.

• Enhancing ranger capacity and improving coordination with law enforcement agencies can significantly help reduce illegal activities.

Future Cooperation

Participants agreed that ensuring the sustainability of Local Protected Area management, maintaining regular multi-stakeholder engagement, and increasing the overall effectiveness of conservation efforts should remain priorities. Accordingly, the institutions committed to strengthening their collaboration moving forward.
