LMU Munich Visit to Mongolia - Education for Sustainability
Professor Ralf Ludwig from the Institute of Geography at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich), the coordinator of the EL Mundo education program for sustainable development, Dr. Katrin Geneuss, and research assistants Lukas Lehnert and Luisa Horstmann visited Mongolia from 13 to 25 May 2024 at the invitation of the NUM's Environmental Education Center (UBZ).
During their visit, the guests not only exchanged experiences from LMU, but also offered advice and held discussions regarding the establishment of the Education Center for Sustainable Development at NUM's UBZ. In addition, the experts organized various training courses for the staff of the UBZ as well as for educational institutions and project organizations working in the field of education for sustainable development. The training courses included:
- Education for sustainable development at university level
- An interesting excursion by a curious squirrel
- Didactics for sustainable development: for children and the public
- Didactics for sustainable development: for teachers and educators
- Educational programs for children in the forest and in the field
The participants were the Department of Biology of the NUM, the Department of Lifelong Education and Distance Learning of the University of Education, the Department of Geography, the Khan Khentii State Special Protected Area (SPA), the Hustain National Park, Human-Centered Nature, the nature conservation NGO, the German Development Cooperation (GIZ in german) and the Hanns-Seidel-Foundation Mongolia.
The Environmental Education Center aims to become a national education center for ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) in Mongolia. The visit enabled the parties to establish contacts, explore potential fields of research in ESD and exchange views on topics such as climate change, environmental law, biodiversity and the management of specially protected areas. In addition, discussions and recommendations were held on cooperation in setting up the education and research camp for ESD in collaboration with the UBZ and the Khan Khentii Protected Area Administration. The training of personnel capacities, excursion routes and financial mechanisms were important key points.
