Fostering Peace and Cooperation in a Challenging Northeast Asia: HSF Mongolia Co-Hosts Security Workshop
Northeast Asia faces significant challenges, with rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula, a more assertive role from Russia and China, and a continuous search for reconciliation or peaceful coexistence. Despite these difficulties, Mongolia has successfully navigated the region, maintaining good relations with its neighbors. Meanwhile, Japan and South Korea, historically burdened by conflict, have attempted to forge a new chapter of cooperation. However, questions remain about the long-term sustainability of this alliance, particularly in light of potential changes in leadership in both countries.
Professor Dr. Bernhard Seliger of HSF Korea emphasized the Foundation's ongoing commitment to fostering peace and cooperation in Northeast Asia. He highlighted a series of workshops organized under the regional project, all aiming to enhance understanding among experts. Prof. Seliger expressed hope for North Korea's future inclusion in these regional efforts.
Felix Glenk of HSF Mongolia elaborated on the Foundation's support for networks of young environmentalists within the Northeast Asian regional project. This initiative underscores the importance of engaging a broader community in tackling regional environmental challenges.
The workshop featured presentations and discussions from experts in Japan, Korea, and Mongolia, delving into security, political, and cultural perspectives on regional cooperation. This collaborative dialogue fostered a crucial exchange of ideas and perspectives, paving the way for potential solutions and a more secure and peaceful future for Northeast Asia.
