Sustainable resource management

As part of the Green Mongolia Campaign, the Hanns Seidel Foundation, in cooperation with the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), organized the first Livestock Breeders' Forum in the village of Bayantooroi in the buffer zone of the Great Gobi. The aim of the forum was an intensive exchange of experience and knowledge transfer. The focus was on involving livestock breeders in nature conservation and providing essential knowledge and information for the livestock breeders' cooperatives to enable sustainable management of the natural resources in the five soums of the Gobi nature reserve.

The following presentations were given during the forum:

 

  1. Dr. Tungalag, Country Director of ZSL in Mongolia, presented a paper on 'Environmentally Friendly Herders'.

  2. Professor Ms. Khandsuren, consultant of the Great Gobi Project at the Agricultural University of Mongolia, spoke about 'Livestock number, production efficiency and quality of the livestock population in the buffer zone'.

  3. Ms. Bujinlkham, a lawyer at the Hanns-Seidel-Foundation, gave a presentation on 'Law on Genetic Resources, Wild Camel Protection and Animal Rights'.

In addition, the experiences, successes and challenges of resource management of cattle breeders' cooperatives in Arkhangai province were presented and subsequently discussed by the participants.
