Conference
Young representatives of Mongolia at the World Environment Parliament

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEA 6), known as the World Environment Parliament, meets every two years in Nairobi, Kenya, to discuss issues that require urgent attention due to their negative impact on the environment. The focus is on important measures concerning relevant resolutions and decisions. These measures are to be implemented worldwide.

The top participants in the legal field of the program 'UN Young Delegate - Enviromental Leadership 2023', the lawyers O. Monkhnasan and Mr. R. Lkhagvabayar, represented Mongolia at the conference.

The Assembly includes representatives from 9 main groups. These include children and young people from 193 UN member states, representatives of entrepreneurs, representatives of local indigenous peoples and UN environmental programmes, representatives of UN development programmes as well as regional, international and other relevant organizations for the environment and nature conservation. Around 5,600 delegates from over 190 countries took part in this year's conference.

“As a representative of Mongolian youth and a young lawyer, I participated in the meeting of the working group ‘Important processes of decision-making and decision-making at the international level’ in order to prevent further environmental degradation by protecting nature. It was also possible to get to know the negotiation methods of the representatives of the participating countries and to participate in person,” emphasized the lawyer Lhagvabayar.

Numerous side events also took place in the run-up to the conference. One of these was the UN 'Youth Environment Conference', in which the young representative O. Munkhnasan took part.

The conference took place on February 17 and 18, 2024. As a result of the conference, the 'Global Youth Declaration on Environment 2024' was published and the declaration was presented to global decision-makers during the 6th session of the United Nations Environment Program.

This declaration encouraged young people to make political decisions with a long-term perspective and to develop measures based on the principle of intergenerational equality. More than 10 seminars were offered, and panel discussions were held on more than 10 topics. For example: the right of children to live in a healthy, safe and sustainable environment, efficient use of resources, youth participation against chemicals and waste, management of environmental protection activities, youth participation in multilateral environmental agreements, energy saving and climate change.

At the opening of the Youth Environment Assembly, it was emphasized that "youth participation should be a real action, not just a slogan, and how important young people's participation is for creating a better world."

In her speech, the Director of the United Nations Environment Program, Inger Anderson, called on "young people to be true to themselves, to rely on science and to defend their opinions with bold ambition."
