Field trip
Excursion to Khar-Us National Park

The guest speakers of the international conference “Central Asian Flyway (CAF) Initiative - Perspectives from Mongolia” and the HSS representatives visited the Khar-Us Lake National Park with the aim of conducting a field study together with the local experts of the WSCC. The aim was to explore the ecosystem service in the area and its significance for the various species.

Various species of biodiversity have been recorded in Khar-Us National Park, including 54 mammal species, 5 fish species, 5 reptile species and 390 invertebrate species.  With the registration of 268 bird species, the national park has been registered as a Ramsar, EAAF and recently as a MAB site in 1999.

With this in mind, discussions were held with a ranger and staff from the WSCC bird tracking station in Khovd and the delegates talked to them about their daily activities and about management planning at the local level.

During the study, they attended the lesson on the ecosystem of Lake Khar-Us for the students of Khovd University, led by Prof. Dr. Michael Walther, and exchanged ideas.

An essential cornerstone of the study was the conversation with Mr. Ganzorig.B, Director, Khar-Us Lake National Park Administration in Khovd Aimag and his colleagues. There they discussed the activities, international cooperation and challenges regarding migratory birds.
