Identification of Major Tree and Shrub Species of Mongolia and Their Ecological–Economic Assessment

On 27 November 2025, the National Forensic Agency of Mongolia hosted the official launch of the new publication titled “Identification of Major Tree and Shrub Species of Mongolia and Their Ecological–Economic Assessment.”

Mongolia’s forest ecosystem is formed under harsh climatic conditions and is one of the country’s most fragile natural zones, covering 12.95 million hectares, or 8.3% of the national territory. In recent years, illegal logging and forest degradation have intensified, creating an urgent need to improve forest resource assessment, determine ecological–economic losses caused by illegal activities, and strengthen the capacity of law enforcement and professional institutions to accurately identify tree and shrub species. This handbook has been developed in response to these critical needs.

The book was reviewed and edited by Academician, Sc.D Ch. Dorjsuren, Prof. Dr. G. Tserenkhand, and Dr. B. Altanzagas, while the content was compiled and prepared by a research team led by Dr. S. Dorjderem, Head of the Environmental Analysis and Assessment Laboratory. The publication provides comprehensive guidance on identifying Mongolia’s major tree and shrub species through external morphology and wood anatomy, as well as methodologies for assessing ecological and economic damage resulting from illegal logging. This resource is expected to contribute significantly to the protection of Mongolia’s forest ecosystems, the fight against illegal logging, and the strengthening of professional forensic and environmental assessment capacities. The publication was financially supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation Mongolia, and the project was implemented in close cooperation with the Ministry of Justice and Home Affairs and the National Council for Crime Prevention.
